CommunicAsia 2003 cancelled due to SARS outbreak

SINGAPORE-Asia’s largest wireless event scheduled for June has been cancelled due to the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak in Singapore and the region. BroadcastAsia 2003, which was scheduled to be held concurrently from June 17-20, also has been cancelled.

Due to the large number of telecom events, including ITU World Telecom and CTIA Wireless I.T., scheduled for later in the year, the show was cancelled rather than postponed.

Singapore Exhibition Services, the show organizer, said it was obvious the number of foreign visitors to the show would be “severely affected” due to Worth Health Organization and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advisories against traveling to SARS-affected areas. “As such, we are concerned that CommunicAsia would not live up to its reputation as an international platform gathering sellers and buyers from all over the world,” SES said.

The next CommunicAsia is scheduled from June 15-18, 2004.

“This was a tough decision borne out of the necessity due to the SARS outbreak and the lack of options for a suitable time frame in which to reschedule the event,” said SES.
