LSI LOGIC GRACES THE WIRELESS STAGE WITH GSM CHIPSET

MILPITAS, Calif.-LSI Logic announced a new microchip architecture that offers Global System for Mobile communications baseband processing capabilities in a single-chip system.

The single-chip architecture will allow manufacturers to develop a GSM mobile phone with enhanced features and significantly extended standby and talk times, at a reduced manufacturing cost, said LSI.

“The key requirements for components inside a digital mobile phone are very low power consumption, a very high level of integration and low cost, which is achieved by reliable and cost-effective volume manufacturing,” said John Daane, vice president and general manager of LSI’s communications product division. “LSI Logic’s single-chip implementation meets the demands of current and future wireless handset manufacturers.”

Capabilities of the single-chip include a complete baseband modem with all analog and digital functions and mixed-signal cells for audio, baseband and radio control, comprehensive DSP software for channel coding/decoding, equalizer and full rate speech coding, enhanced full-rate and GSM half-rate speech codec options, fax and data service capabilities and subscriber identity module interfacing, said LSI.

LSI also has formed a wireless communications business unit within its communications products division to support the worldwide wireless applications market.
