Globalstar, AeroAstro cooperate on satellite tracking modems

SAN JOSE, Calif.—Globalstar and small satellite provider AeroAstro are developing a low-cost data modem for remote sensing and asset tracking via satellite, the companies announced.

The new modems will be part of a system that combines Globalstar’s satellite network and AeroAstro’s Sensor Enabled Notification System technology. It will allow data to be sent at preset or random intervals from the modem over the satellite network and then transmitted to the customer’s data collection facility via the Internet.

The pager-size modem is expected to be available in volume quantities for about $60 each. A demonstration is scheduled for late summer.
