AT&T may be taking a direct approach to video with a plan to purchase DirecTV. The Wall Street Journal reports that AT&T has approached the nation’s second-largest satellite TV provider (after Dish Network) about the possibility of an acquisition.
AT&T may or may not be talking to DirecTV, but the carrier is clearly thinking about video content. Last week AT&T announced plans to invest in over-the-top video providers through a partnership with The Chernin Group.
As more and more consumers watch video on mobile devices, Tier 1 carriers are looking at ways to get more control of video content and its delivery. Buying DirecTV would give AT&T more bargaining power with content providers, and would give it a third route into the living room, adding satellite to its mobile and landline offerings.
