Verizon Wireless looks to tempt BYOD crowd

Verizon Wireless continued to dabble in rate plan alterations, this week announcing plans to allow customers to bring their own smartphone to the carrier’s More Everything rate plans at a reduced per-line rate.

The carrier said that beginning April 17, customers could bring their own compatible smartphone – “bring-your-own-device” – to a More Everything plan for $10 less per month on rate plans that include eight gigabytes or less of shared data or $25 less per month for rate plans that include 10 GB or more of shared data. The discount brings the cost per line to $30 for the former and $15 per line for the latter rate plans.

Current Verizon Wireless customers on a month-to-month contract will also be able to move that line of service to a More Everything plan for the same discounted price.

The latest offer, which Verizon Wireless said would be available for a “limited time,” followed recent changes made by smaller rival T-Mobile US that included new tablet offers, a new entry-level rate plan and a challenge for rivals to end overage fees.

Verizon Wireless earlier this month rolled out similar discounts for customers signing up for its Edge device payment plan. That move aligned Verizon Wireless rate plans with that of AT&T Mobility and continues a push by carriers to separate contract plans from device subsidies.
