Microsoft is giving its crown jewel away for free in a move aimed at increasing its market share in mobile. The software giant said yesterday that its Windows 8.1 operating system will be free for all devices with a screen size of less than nine inches. It is calling the new free version of the software Windows for the Internet of Things. It will only run mobile apps.
The move follows last month’s news that Microsoft will make its Office software available for the iPad, another change in strategy aimed at winning more mobile users over to Microsoft. The company is worried that Android will become the de facto mobile operating system.
