AT&T, Verizon invest in Texas telecom infrastructure

Recently, individual customers and organizations based in Texas have seen vast improvements to the state's telecommunications networks and infrastructure thanks to investments from Verizon and AT&T.

Verizon's Texas investment
In late March, Verizon announced a considerable investment in wireline telecommunications infrastructure support in Texas, totaling $348 million. The funding was utilized to improve the company's fiber optic and Internet Protocol-based networks to better suit customer needs for rapid bandwidth resources, high-quality video and communication systems.

The telco also completed other wireline infrastructure programs last year, including the rollout of its Verizon Enterprise Solutions service portfolio. The offerings provide cloud, IT, enterprise mobility, security and best-in-class communication solutions for Texas and global clients.

AT&T Texas investment: Project Velocity IP
AT&T recently announced a near $1.25 billion investment in Houston's hardline and wireless networks between 2011 and 2013. The venture helped foster improvements to speed, reliability, coverage and service performance for residential and enterprise clients.

The capital came as part of Project Velocity IP, or VIP, AT&T's investment plan for growing and upgrading its IP broadband networks. Last year alone, the company completed 647 enhancements to Houston-area services, including the addition of network capacity and bandwidth network connections. The telco also considerably expanded its service footprint, which now provides U-verse Internet and video to 67,000 new customers, 17,740 businesses and 483 multi-tenant locations. Overall, clients in 18 towns now have access to AT&T's 4G LTE services.

Bob Harvey, Greater Houston Partnership president and CEO, noted that the telecom's investment in the Houston region shows a commitment to improving communications in the area.

"Connectivity is critical to Houston's innovative business community – particularly the energy industry, which relies on a quick and flawlessly reliable communications infrastructure to facilitate today's increasingly data-heavy processes."
