Enabling VoLTE: Broadcom shows off new LTE modem

Voice-over-LTE uses spectrum more efficiently than does 3G, so the nation’s largest carriers are working hard to roll out VoLTE in order to get more use from their spectrum. Chipmakers see demand for LTE modems that support VoLTE, but these modems require rigorous testing due to the low latency expectations for voice calls.

Lars Johnsson is Broadcom’s senior director of 4G LTE product marketing. At CES 2013, he showed RCR Wirless News the testing process for the company’s upcoming LTE modem, which he says uses space, power and spectrum more efficiently than do existing LTE modems.
