ThreatLabZ: Android catching up to Apple’s iOS in enterprise use

Enterprise adoption of Google’s Android operating system is quickly catching up to Apple’s iOS, according to ThreatLabZ, the research arm of cloud security company Zscaler. The company just released its third quarter “State of the Web” research infographic, which shows that Android accounted for 45.2% of all mobile device use in enterprises during the quarter while iOS accounted for 49.6%.

According to the survey, Android use grew by 22% in the third quarter over the second quarter, while iOS use dropped by 10%. Research In Motion’s BlackBerry OS fell by 31% to a mere 5% of all mobile device use in enterprises.

To discuss the report’s results, RCR Wireless News interviewed Michael Sutton, VP of security research at Zscaler. During the video interview, he talked about security concerns, mobile device management strategies, device manufacturers and operating systems competition, among other issues. He found, for instance, that of the iOS apps tested, 25% shared users’ personally-identifiable information with third parties.
