Google Brazil’s president detained for failing to remove YouTube videos

The president of Google Brazil, Fabio Coelho, was arrested and later released on September 26, for not removing two videos from YouTube that allegedly contain slander and defamed a mayoral candidate in Campo Grande, Alcides Bernal (PP).

The detention followed a Mato Grosso do Sul state judge’s decision that the company failed to remove the videos that attacked a mayoral candidate in violation of Brazilian law.

Before the Coelho’s arrest, Google’s PR firm in Brazil told web portal G1 that the company is appealing the court’s decision, claiming that the YouTube user who posted the video, not the company, who is responsible for the video’s content.

Brazil is holding elections on October 7 to choose mayors, deputy mayors and city councilors.
