Continuing trend, Motorola Solutions announces more cloud-based products

In about a week, Motorola Solutions made two announcements that underscore the company’s embrace of cloud-based technology. New enterprise-grade WLAN service management capabilities will now be delivered via the cloud. The company also introduced a modular Wi-Fi Access Point (AP) that allows hardware snap-in modules to extend functionality beyond traditional AP features.

Motorola Solutions said it has extended the feature set of its premise-based systems to WLAN operators who are looking for a complete cloud offering with a WLAN Planner for RF coverage planning and a WiNG 5 solution for controller and management functionality, plus AirDefense for wireless security and network assurance.

Motorola executives told RCR Wireless News that flexibility and modularity are key. “We are looking forward to making it easy for people to deploy networks,” said Todd Nightingale, general manager for AirDefense.

It is not the first time that Motorola Solutions has placed products in the cloud, but Nightingale explained it is the first time it has done so with this type of wireless technology.

The firm’s new solution is available as a software-as-a-service (SaaS). With this move, Motorola Solutions is targeting organizations that want to improve their full life-cycle management of WLAN. It cited retail, hospitality, healthcare, and other enterprise owners as those who might benefit from a cloud-based solution, in part because they might be uncertain about their future needs.

Regarding its new Wi-Fi access point (AP), which was released May 2, Motorola Solutions is eying retailers that want to transform their shopping experience and enhance productivity. Branded AP 8132, it is a modular Wi-Fi access point (AP) and can be combined with Motorola’s WiNG 5.
