Samsung attracts carriers to Galaxy S platform

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. updated the distribution plans for its Galaxy S smartphone platform with Verizon Wireless (VZ), T-Mobile USA Inc. (DT), Sprint Nextel Corp. (S) and U.S. Cellular Corp. (USM) all announcing today plans to launch a version of the Google Inc. (GOOG) Android-powered device in the coming months. The announcements follows AT&T Mobility’s (T) saying earlier this month that it would launch its own version of the device.
All of the devices will have a similar form factor that will include a 4-inch AMOLED touchscreen, a 5-megapixel camera, run the Android 2.1 operating system and are powered by a 1 GHz Samsung processor. The Sprint Nextel version also includes support for the carrier’s WiMAX-based “4G” service and includes a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and a front-facing camera.
T-Mobile USA said it would begin offering the device on July 21 for $200 after all rebates, while AT&T Mobility, Verizon Wireless, Sprint Nextel and U.S. Cellular would only say the device would launch in the next couple of months.
Samsung had originally unveiled the Galaxy S platform at this year’s CTIA event.
