Inspiron Mini 9 for $100
AT&T Mobility and Dell are offering the Inspiron Mini 9 for $100, after a $350 mail-in rebate and a two-year LaptopConnect service contract, which costs $60 per month.
The device features Wi-Fi and HSPA connectivity to the carrier’s broadband network, a nearly 9-inch display, an Intel Atom processor and Windows XP Home Edition.
The offer is good through Jan. 31 direct from Dell.
The two companies are targeting the youth market with the device, stating the device “ideal for teens, tweens, travelers and Tweeters” for social networking and entertainment.
The offering comes shortly after a similar deal from RadioShack Corp. and AT&T, for the $100 Acer Aspire One (after a rebate and with two years’ worth of AT&T Mobility’s mobile broadband service at $60 per month).

This ATT/Dell mini offering is tempting. But - in order to decide on whether to pull the trigger and buy, its purchase must address the one critical question: Does it solve an existing problem or meet an unmet need? The ANSWER: I'm not so sure. It would seem it is the same functionality of a smart phone, only with a bigger screen. Sure - for teens and tweens it's a new toy. But still it doesn't do anything different than an existing laptop or smart phone already does. Now render one of these devices with new functionality for business use, i.e. an unmet need, say for physicians, lawyers, people who write - and you have something new.
