The following list details this week's infrastructure awards for the cellular, Wi-Fi, and WiMAX industries. The contracts are broken down by transmission technology, country and vendor. The value of the contract is included when available.

Cellular

--Qatar: Nokia Siemens Networks said it won a $61 million agreement with Qtel to modernize and optimize the carrier’s nationwide 2G and 3G networks.

--United Kingdom: Mobile Broadband Network Ltd. selected Ericsson to operate and maintain the company’s network. MBNL is a joint venture of 3UK and T-Mobile UK formed to manage the integration of both carriers’ 3G radio access networks. The agreement with Ericsson is a four-year managed services contract for the operation and maintenance of the consolidated network.

--Vietnam: Alcatel-Lucent said it won a $48 million contract from Vietnam Mobile Telecom Services Co. to expand and enhance the carrier’s Mobifone mobile network. Alcatel-Lucent said the deal calls for it to provide more than 1,400 base stations based on GSM/EDGE technology.

WiMAX

--India: Nortel said it has teamed up with the Chhattisgarh State Government to modernize its communications infrastructure with a new high-bandwidth State Wide Area Network that will include a mix of wireline and wireless technologies. The deployment will include WiMAX equipment.

Miscellaneous

China: China’s high-speed Shijiazhuang-to-Taiyuan railway plans to add a wireless network for passenger use with equipment provided by Andrew. The company will supply its Radiax radiating cables to support the GSM-R wireless service.
