Mobile messaging not impacted by economic downturn

The difficult global economy is not hampering growth of mobile messaging services, according to a new report from ABI Research.
The firm said mobile messaging service revenues are expected to grow from $151 million in 2008 to more than $212 billion by 2013.
“Mobile messaging ARPUs are 85%+ of all handset data services revenues regardless of region and will remain so for many years,” said Dan Shey, principal analyst at ABI.
“As messaging involves all the biggest players in the mobile industry there will be incentives for all mobile messaging suppliers to work cooperatively to serve customers well and propel all parties through these rough economic waters.”
ABI said messaging suppliers like operators, device OEMs, content providers and middleware vendors can do much to make the messaging experience enjoyable for users, but ultimately adoption will depend on whether or not customers see mobile messaging as a more efficient way to communicate than voice services.

Something seems to be wrong with the dollar figures mentioned in the article. See excerpt from article below."The firm said mobile messaging service revenues are expected to grow from $151 million in 2008 to more than $212 billion by 2013."

At least one messaging enabler, the VeriSign LightSurf group, is adjusting to lower revenues by downsizing staff in several rounds of layoffs. Could it be that only one player is affected or are there more suffering from the same syndrome?
