LG's first smartphone, the Incite

Looking to catch a wave, LG Electronics Co. delivered its first smartphone for the United States market to AT&T Mobility today.

The “Incite” is a touchscreen, 3G device running Microsoft Corp.’s Windows Mobile 6.1 with productivity and entertainment features, including a 3 megapixel camera and camcorder, and sells for $200 with a $100 mail-in rebate and two-year contract.

LG has been highly successful in the U.S. market by providing a range of low-, mid- and high-tier phones to the top carriers in both GSM and CDMA technologies and now rivals Motorola Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. in a three-way battle for leadership here.

The Incite, however, is the company’s first attempt to enter the potentially lucrative touchscreen smartphone space. The device appeared to be positioned to appeal equally to consumers and enterprise users, a market sweet spot sought by many vendors and successfully exploited by Research In Motion Ltd.

The Incite also offers multiple modes of input, from the finger- or stylus-driven touchscreen to a scroll wheel.

The slab-design device includes a virtual keypad in both landscape and upright modes, assisted-GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a variety of productivity applications and AT&T Mobility services such as AT&T Navigator.

LG has left memory capacity to the user, with only 128 megabytes of on-device storage, but with a microSD capacity of 16 gigabytes.
