Infrastructure awards wrap-up: Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Nokia Siemens Networks and more

The following list details this week's infrastructure awards for the cellular, Wi-Fi, and WiMAX industries. The contracts are broken down by transmission technology, country and vendor. The value of the contract is included when available.

Cellular

--United Kingdom: Ericsson said it has been chosen by Cable & Wireless EAUS (Europe, Asia and US) to supply and operate a complete GSM mobile network for the carrier’s new Fixed Mobile Convergence service in the United Kingdom. As part of the deal, Ericsson will run the network for five years.

WiMAX

--Azerbaijan: Delta Telecom chose Alcatel-Lucent to deploy an end-to-end 802.16e-2005 (Rev. E) WiMAX network that will provide stationary, nomadic and mobile applications.

--Botswana: Airspan Networks said it has been chosen by Internet service provider Netspread to provide its MicroMAX base stations and ProST customer premises equipment for a WiMAX deployment.

Miscellaneous

--Brazil: Brasil Telecom is using UTStarcom Inc.’s mSwitch solution to power its fixed-mobile convergence network.

--China: Nokia Siemens Networks said it signed an agreement to implement a GSM-R solution to provide high-speed, secure communications on trains running between Beijing and Tianjin.

--Italy: Alcatel-Lucent said it signed a turnkey equipment and services contract with 3 Italia to expand and optimize its broadcast Mobile TV network.
