VZW CEO discusses potential Alltel job cuts

Verizon Wireless President and CEO Lowell McAdam
A number of Alltel Communications L.L.C employees may soon lose their jobs.
According to an Associated Press report, when Verizon Wireless’ purchase of Alltel finalizes, the carrier plans to keep a regional headquarters in Alltel’s base city of Little Rock. However, the existing Alltel headquarters in Little Rock has 3,000 employees. Verizon Wireless will cut that number down to 100, likely getting rid of top executive positions and midlevel positions.
Unemployment scares aren’t in the too-near future though. According to the report, Verizon Wireless President and CEO Lowell McAdam said he hopes for the merger to close by the year’s end, and that staffing decisions wouldn’t be finalized until after that date.
For those getting the axe, McAdams said there may be additional positions available due to Verizon Wireless’ recent spectrum purchases and related buildout plans.

Bob, if you spell experience on your resume like you spelled it here, it is no wonder you haven't been hired. If you have problems spelling, have someone proofread for you before you submit your resume. Some of the most intelligent persons I know cannot spell, but will be discriminated by those who can.

The reality is most will lose their jobs. I have been in the cellular business for over 16 years in the Technical arena. I have been eliminated 3 times thru three "mergers" The reason given is there is "no room" for me. My view is 16 years experiance and appropiate compensation for that knowledge really hurts the profit margin. Now we wonder why call quality is dropping, and Customer service is poor at best. You get what you pay for, and what your paying for is a younger work force that could care less about the network and its subscribers.

And AT&T free calls to almost 73 million or even 100 million phones if you happen to have AT&T landline and go to a Unity plan *in addition* to getting Rollover. So what's your point Gaby? Besides being either a VZW employee and/or fanboy/girl? This article is about synergies being realized and possible job cuts that come with those synergies. Redundancies cost companies money so they will cut them. No two ways about it. I feel bad for those who fall on the wrong side of the cut. Small consolation that this market will likely be one that VZW must divest in order to get DOJ and FCC approval. Maybe some folks here will still have jobs.

Who knows what is going to happen if and when the merger finally goes through! But i highly doubt verizon would just let people go like that more then likley people will just get shuffed around welcome to the world of corporate people!!! Obviously the plans will most likey change but you can be grandfathered just like verizon dose now for their old customers who are on plans that are not offered any more! but i think its stupid that everyone is worrying that far in advance!

Alltel employees get the same issues from customer visiting Verizon stores. They are telling customers that they will soon be Verizon anyway so there's not need to stay with Alltel or activate with Alltel. It works BOTH ways. We are all in the middle here, so let's stop the name blame game, grow up and just do our jobs.

I work for Alltel in one of their call centers in Louisiana. People are really afraid of losing their jobs, but that is what happens when mergers come about. Customers are using this merger as an excuse to barter with Alltel to get upgrades or get Alltel to keep them as customers. And most of the time Alltel is giving them what they want!! Verizon is a very good company and I am sure that once the merger completes all this nonsense will end. I have Verizon sevice and had it before coming to work for Alltel. Never had one bit of trouble with their service, exceptional!

I read some comments that they had poor performance with Verizon thats why they switched to Alltel and now they will be back to Verizon. Well, that is the exact reason why Verizon and Alltel merger makes sense. By adding Alltel, Verizon can expand its network to places where it had poor coverage.

you all must realize that "grandfathered" is a very temporary thing. i have been in this game for over 5 years and there are no exceptions, things change. you may be told today that you don't have to change a thing, but the next day or even the day after that, you will get the chain letter that tells you to change your plan or get out. anytime a company is bought out, the company taking over gives you the option to terminate without penalty and that is a very good time to shop around.

I am looking for the upside for the human beings of the United States. Layoffs, fewer competitors to drive prices down, less companies to drive innovation... Am I too dense to see the upside?? Help me here.
