Tracfone’s Net10 dives into unlimited fray

July 28 2008 - 3:56 pm ET | Allie Winter | RCR Wireless News

Tracfone Wireless Inc. subsidiary Net10 has jumped into the increasingly popular unlimited-service-plan play with its new Net10 Unlimited Plan, which offers unlimited calling and texting for $80 per month. Per Tracfone’s modus operandi, the unlimited offer does not require a contract or credit checks, though a customer does have to set up a recurring payment system using a credit card.

The offering one-ups rival Virgin Mobile USA Inc. — that carrier’s recently launched Totally Unlimited plan also offers unlimited calling without a credit check or contract for $80 per month — with the unlimited texting option, unlimited usage of Net10 Mobile Web and unlimited calls to directory assistance. Virgin Mobile USA allows customers to add unlimited texting for an additional $10 per month.

William Ho, analyst at Current Analysis, said in a report that, although Net10 isn’t quite as well known as the Virgin Mobile USA brand, launching this plan is good way for Tracfone to draw in higher-value customers and possibly improve its low, $11 average revenue per user.

The difference between this and the $45 unlimited carrier (name not mentioned) is that the coverage for the $45 carrier is not as extensive.

With Tracfone you can use the service any where in the united states and some international by signing up with their "international long distance" program. I think it's a great deal.

For Net10, you can use anywhere in the United States.. as long as you have Network coverage, unlike Boost Mobile where it is only in you local calling area.

The difference between Virgin's plan and the $45 one you mention is that on Virgin you can make calls from anywhere to anywhere in the US on Sprint's network. For $45, you can only make calls in a small area and often the reception is terrible. If you go out of your area, you're out of luck.

Come on! Yet another wireless plan with an overpriced "unlimited" package. How about $45 for the same thing through someone else (I wonder who). I'll save my money for gas, which for some reason is priced high from EVERY carrier.
