Global mobile numbers to hit 2.3B by 2010, half to use 3G

KINGS PARK, N.Y.-By 2010, worldwide subscribers will reach 2.3 billion individual wireless subscribers, according to Visant Strategies “World Mobile Subscriber Markets 2005” report.

Of those 2.3 billion subscribers, nearly half will use third-generation services, said the company.

“What we are seeing today is not only the growth and use of high-speed mobile networks, but also continued significant growth in second-tier and third-tier wireless markets,” said study author Larry Swasey. “In the top markets 3G has been implemented, viable high-speed handsets are being shipped in quantities and users are signing up for high-speed data services. In other areas, success is due to simple voice and data strategies where mobile is being used instead of implementing a wireless local loop.”

The report predicts GSM/GPRS subscribers will number more than 1 billion in 2010, while W-CDMA, HSDPA, EDGE and CDMA systems will serve hundreds of millions of subscribers each.
