Hertz to offer Wayport Wi-Fi service, directions

Wireless and wired neutral host broadband service provider Wayport Inc. said it has reached a preliminary agreement with Hertz Corp. to provide high-speed Internet access to Hertz customers at more than 50 airport locations across the country beginning early next year.

Hertz and Wayport also said they are planning to incorporate Wayport’s Wi-Fi network at hotels, airports and McDonald’s restaurants into the Hertz NeverLost onboard navigation system in its rental cars, providing customers with directions to the closest Wayport Wi-Fi location.

The agreement also calls for Hertz to join Wayport’s recently launched Wi-Fi World initiative that was initiated through Wayport’s Wi-Fi deal with McDonald’s earlier this year.

Wayport claims it currently provides wireless and wired broadband access in more than 4,700 locations across the country and has roaming agreements with a number of wireless operators including Sprint Corp. and Verizon Wireless as well as Cingular Wireless L.L.C.’s parent company SBC Communications Inc.
