T-Mobile USA subscribers get an out: Carrier raises texting fee

Change will allow affected customers to cancel contract without paying ETF

T-Mobile USA Inc. announced it will raise its texting rates to 20 cents a message. The change will go into effect August 29 for those without text bundles or for those who exceed their allotted number of messages.

T-Mobile USA said it will not change the pricing on its texting bundles.

For affected customers, a T-Mobile rep said they may be able to get out of their contracts without paying the carrier’s early termination fee.

“[It will] depend upon the customer's usage and the terms of the customer's agreement with us,” a T-Mobile representative said.

Interestingly, T-Mobile USA recently implemented a pro-rated ETF structure.

And for those who want to get rid of text messaging completely, T-Mobile plans to offer a service with capabilities to block unwanted messages, likely to accompany the carrier’s current text blocking options.

T-Mobile USA is the latest major carrier to raise its texting rates, following similar moves from Sprint Nextel Corp. and others.
