Industry Canada’s ongoing advanced wireless services spectrum auction hit a bit of a milestone as the average price per megahertz per potential customer covered eclipsed the 54 cents per MHz/pop generated during the U.S. AWS auction, which was held in 2006. The Canadian licenses include spectrum in the 1.7/2.1 GHz band.

According to Ric Prentiss at Raymond James & Associates, the Canadian AWS auction soared past the 80 cents per MHz/pop mark during round 21, and further climbed during round 22 to nearly $2.7 billion. The latest round saw an additional $84 million in revenue through 47 new high bids. The U.S. auction ended with nearly $13.7 billion in total winning bids.

Rogers Communications Inc. was the biggest spender through 22 rounds with 35 high bids totaling $634 million. Other high bidders include Telus Communications Co. with 60 high bids totaling $558 million and 9193-2962 Québec Inc. with 22 high bids totaling $491 million.

Licenses garnering the most money include the 20 megahertz F-Block license covering Toronto ($310 million), the 20 megahertz B-Block license covering Southern Ontario ($250 million) and the 20 megahertz A-Block license covering Toronto ($232 million).
