Egypt

Egypt plans to sell 10 percent of Telecom Egypt, its fixed-line telecommunications monopoly, in June. The aim of the partial privatization is to reduce red tape and improve competitiveness, the government said. The government will then wait before continuing with the privatization. The sale of the company, also called the Egyptian Communications Co., was originally expected in January. The firm is valued at around US$7.2 billion.

Turkey

The Turkish government launched a sale of 20 percent of state telephone monopoly Turk Telekom. The company is valued at US$18 billion to US$20 billion. The tender will be completed in June or July, the government said. The country also plans a public offering for a 14-percent stake in the company sometime next year.
