Despite expected mid-range price, the Samsung A90 5G hardly seems like a mid-range phone as far as features go
As expected, most 5G phones that have so far hit the market are premium products, such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G and OnePlus 7 Pro 5G. However, unlike previous device rollouts, it appears that while still early in the commercial cycle, smartphone manufacturers are bringing mid-range, 5G-enabled phones to market. The early availability of affordable 5G phones is perhaps an indication of just how ubiquitous manufacturers expect 5G to become in the near future.
One such mid-range, 5G-enabled smartphone is Samsung’s recently announced Galaxy A90 5G. Although a 5G device, the A90 falls in line behind Samsung’s higher range device, and is therefore, expected to hit a more reasonable price point. Noticeably absent from the A90 5G, for instance, is the quad-camera systems and flip-up camera mechanisms that are present in Samsung’s high-end Galaxy A models.
However, while mid-range prices are expected, the A90 5G hardly seems like a mid-range phone as far as features go. The A90 5G has a Snapdragon 855 mobile platform, 6 or 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage. The screen is a 6.7-inch 1080p OLED panel with a small “Infinity-U” notch and an integrated fingerprint sensor. The phone also has a triple camera setup with a 48-megapixel primary sensor, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide camera, 5-megapixel depth info sensor and 32-megapixel selfie camera. Faster charging – 25W – and longer battery life can be expected with the 4,500mAh battery.
The A905G will arrive in Korea this week, finding its way to other countries soon afterwards, and while Samsung has yet to release the device’s price, it is safe to assume that it will certainly be less than the $1,300 one would have to shell out for the Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G.
In addition to being Samsung’s home market, Korea is also red hot in terms of 5G uptake. The country hit the 2 million user mark in August, doubling from the 1 million mark in mid-June. SK Telecom is leading competitors KT and LG Uplus with more than 800,000 users.
