The combination of 5G, IoT and edge requires a multi-cloud strategy
With device support and scaling networks, 2019 will be a big year for the commercialization of 5G but is still very much in the early days. Enhanced mobile broadband that brings higher data speeds to fixed and mobile users will give way to a massive proliferation in Internet of Things (IoT) devices and ultra-reliable and ultra low-latency communications.
Delivering a fiber-like experience wirelessly will provide instantaneous access to cloud services. To enable this new era of connectivity, centralized data center compute and storage resources will be enhanced and also distributed throughout the network to help fully realize the reduced latency of 5G.
To deliver these new networks, operators need to take a more IT-centric approach to building out edge clouds while virtualizing network functions. The combination of a multi-cloud environment, built on virtualized infrastructure, gives operators more flexibility and responsiveness to changing network demand, at greater scale and with a lower price point.
“If you think about what’s happening with all the technology changes, and that most companies and service providers are moving to a multi-cloud strategy, we’re helping customers enable everything in this network transformation from core to edge,” Tom Burns, SVP and GM of Dell EMC Networking & Solutions, told RCR Wireless News.
Burns explained that developments around 5G, IoT and the edge call for investments in physical infrastructure, automation, virtualization and software. He said Dell Technologies – across Dell, Dell EMC, Pivotal, RSA, Secureworks, Virtustream and VMware, covers the entire stack of solutions needed on the journey to 5G.
As it relates to VMware, the Dell Technologies company recently announced expanded relationships with AT&T and Vodafone geared toward a single, cloud-based architecture for 4G and 5G networks. VMware is also working Ericsson and T-Systems to collaborate on telco cloud transformation.
VMware GM of the Telco Group, Shekar Ayyar described the cloud vision “as bringing application connectivity to any device to any cloud. You can look at the cloud as bringing together private, public, hybrid as well as telecom clouds and edge clouds. We have software that supports our customers’ ability to build a robust cloud environment. This gives a complete, view to our customers in terms of what they can rely on VMware for.”
