Nokia, China Mobile complete 5G single-user downlink test

 

The two companies used a device provided by Prisma Telecom Testing for the 5G test

Nokia and China Mobile announced they have successfully completed a 5G single-user downlink test using a third-party device.

The two companies said they achieved a peak data rate of 1.4 GB/s in the trial, which conformed with 3GPP-compliant 5G New Radio (NR) specifications and used a device from Prisma Telecom Testing.

In the test, Nokia provided 5G NR massive multiple-input multiple-output equipment and 3GPP-compliant software on the 5G base station which was configured to a 2.5ms frame structure to fulfill China Mobile’s needs.

“We’re satisfied with the test result. In the future, we’ll work closely with our domestic and international partners, such as Nokia, to accelerate the commercial deployment of 5G, and ensure the technology will be widely used in the industries,” said Yuhong Huang, deputy general manager of China Mobile Research Institute (CMRI).

“The test result is a strong proof of the possibilities 5G might bring to the industries. Nokia will continuously support China’s 5G development by unleashing the potential of 5G and creating 5G use cases with our unparalleled innovative capabilities,” said Mike Wang, president at Nokia GCHN.

Last month, Nokia and China Mobile signed a one-year frame agreement to support the Chinese mobile operator’s transition to a future-oriented network infrastructure. Nokia said the agreement is valued at up to 1 billion euro ($1.14 billion).

Under the terms of the deal, the Finnish vendor will provide China Mobile with end-to-end technology solutions to enable a next-generation network for the provision of cloud-based and machine communications. Nokia will provide additional elements of its mobile radio access and core portfolio in addition to fixed access, IP routing and optical transport, customer experience management.

Nokia and China Mobile will now work to define the products and services that will enable the carrier to explore new opportunities in vertical markets.

Earlier this year, Nokia and China Mobile signed an agreement under which the two companies will jointly investigate how the Chinese operator could extend its service offerings for vertical markets using the capabilities of 5G technology.

The joint research, which was announced during the 2018 Mobile World Congress, will focus on how industries could benefit from the growth of smart cities, smart transportation and intelligent video analytics, Nokia said.

Also, both companies recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to investigate the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to optimize future networks and enable the delivery of new edge cloud and 5G services.

Under the terms of the agreement, the two firms will jointly establish a laboratory in Hangzhou, China to develop the demo system to verify technology use cases using Nokia’s 5G Future X architecture. The deal also stipulates that China Mobile will lead the research in terms of scenario selection, requirements confirmation, open API standardization and solution definition.
