Analyst Angle: Enabling legacy and new users in the 3.5 GHz CBRS band

A conversation about CBRS with Scott Imhoff, SVP Product Marketing, Cambium

The below is only a summary. Download a transcript of the complete interview and access the complete report “3.5 GHz: Assessing technology, deployment options and business models” when it publishes on May 9.

CBRS opens the use of the 3.5 GHz band in the US to a wide set of new players – mobile and cable operators, other service providers, venue owners, and neutral host players – but also expands the opportunity for current users of the spectrum, such a WISPs and fixed-wireless providers.

Cambium Networks provides solutions for these legacy users and is also working on CBRS solutions for both legacy and new users of the band. In this conversation, I talked to Scott Imhoff, Senior Vice President of Product Management at Cambium Networks.

While fully committed to support legacy users – mostly WISP – currently using the 3.65 GHz band and to help them transition to CBRS, Cambium is also working on private networks. Scott told us: ͞Enterprise customers, particularly those with large geographic footprints, [have started] building private networks. Private networks can serve not only their needs, but the needs of the broader community within their geographic area. They’re starting to open up those networks and providing services to their neighbors, in some cases on a for-fee basis. They’re taking a cost center and turning it into a profit center, meeting all their operational needs and requirements, but also providing broadband access and transport to third parties on their network.

We will discuss our upcoming report ” Learning to share. CBRS in the 3.5 GHz band changes how we use spectrum” in a webinar on May 9, 2017, at 8:00 am PT, 11:00 am ET, 4:00 pm BST (UTC+1), 5:00 pm CEST. The webinar will also be available offline for those who cannot dial in.

This topic was further discussed on a webinar with Derek Peterson, CTO of Boingo.
