DAS case study: The Las Vegas Convention Center

Ahead of CES 2017, the Las Vegas Convention Center unveils new 44 zone indoor/outdoor DAS.

With CES, the largest trade show in North America, expected to bring well over 100,000 people to the Las Vegas Convention Center, it’s a big job keeping people connected in the 3.2-million-square-foot venue.

Providing cellular coverage throughout the indoor and outdoor areas of the massive venue – more than 26 football fields of space – requires a massive distributed antenna system, which was newly installed through a partnership between the venue, Cox Business/Hospitality Network and InSite Wireless Group.

“Today’s world is a wireless world, and to provide a first rate customer experience we have to have the infrastructure to ensure visitors have seamless coverage and service,” said Hugh Sinnock, LVCVA’s VP of customer experience. “Investments like this will continue to provide our clients with the best possible tools for conducting business.”

Corning provided the DAS equipment for the 38 indoor zones and six outdoor zones. The neutral-host DAS is designed to support UMTS, CDMA, LTE and TD-LTE technology with 116 four-band HX remotes covering spectrum in the 700, 850, 1900 and 2100 MHz bands, and 116 five-band HX remotes covering the 700, 800, 850, 1900 and 2100 MHz bands. The system is connected by 9.1 miles of coaxial cable, 3.8 miles of 144-strand single mode fiber, 4.7 miles of 24-strand single mode fiber and 1,700 feet of dual 864 strand fiber trunks.

“With the support of our partners at InSite, we’ve constructed a neutral host DAS infrastructure that will provide reliable, high-speed cellular connectivity within the Las Vegas Convention Center,” said Derrick Hill, VP of Cox Business and Hospitality Network in Las Vegas. “As a result, cell providers will be able to give their customers improved coverage and this will enhance the overall convention center experience for attendees and guests.”

The system is designed to support “5G” technology once commercially available, according to project partners.
