Globe: 2016 marks the beginning of digital transformation

The Philippine telco said data monetization will play a key role in digital transformation

BERLIN – Philippine operator Globe Telecom has been actively implementing its digital transformation strategy, said Joe Caliro, Globe’s head of retail and content experience, during a presentation at the Amdocs Experience 2017 event.

The executive said that during the 2010-2013 period, Globe’s strategy focused on the provision of unlimited voice and text messaging services for subscribers. The coverage and the network quality was the key differentiator during this period, he added.

Caliro also explained that the 2013-2015 period has been called “The Dawn of Data,” which led to the introduction of free mobile data and a swift adoption of over-the-top services. He highlighted that content started to play a key role as a differentiator.

From 2016 onward, Globe will focus on “The Digital Life” strategy, in which data monetization plays a key role. The executive said video will be a key requirement from customers. During this phase, operators will see widespread adoption of smartphones and the “internet of things” will start to gain traction.

In June, the Asian operator inked content partnerships with Netflix, Disney, Turner, Sports Illustrated, Smule and Astro as part of its digital transformation strategy. The telco also has existing deals with Spotify, HOOQ and the National Basketball Association. Last year, Globe opened the first Generation 3 flagship stores, in which customers can see and experience Globe’s latest products and services in an interactive way.

Globe is owned by local firm Ayala and Singaporean telco SingTel. Globe ended the first quarter of the year with a market share of 55% in the domestic postpaid mobile market; 25.1% in the prepaid market and also dominates the mobile data market, with a share of 69.8%

As of the end of the second quarter, Globe had 61.6 million mobile subscribers and nearly 850,000 broadband customers.

Globe launched commercial LTE services in 2012. The telco currently offer this service through spectrum in the 700MHz, 1800MHz and 2.5GHz bands.
