Benefit of devops sandboxes to ensure smooth SDN and NFV deployments

SDN and NFV plans by telecom operators need to be tempered by thorough testing to ensure smooth deployments

The telecommunication industry’s ongoing march toward virtualization platforms using software-defined networks, network functions virtualization and cloud technologies looks to be unstoppable, though caution still remains the name of the game.

While operators are anxious to take advantage of the operational and financial efficiencies promised by the move to SDN, NFV and cloud, legacy operations, equipment and expectations require those moves to be taken at a steady pace and only after thorough testing.

One of those testing regimes is the use of sandboxes, which allow various parties to “play” with equipment and platforms in a safe environment to work out the kinks before unleashing virtualized platforms into the wild. One actor in the field is Quali, which notes sandboxes are the foundational and critical component of a network test lab, and allow testers to automate the network environment in order to run trials.

On this week’s NFV/SDN Reality Check we spoke with Joan Wrabetz, CTO at Quali, for a look at how devops sandboxes are creating an easier bridge for integrating various network virtualization components.

Make sure to check out our next show when we speak with Juniper Networks on delivering NFV solutions to address different types of operational models.
