Why open source remains key for NFV and SDN deployments

Lenovo Networking discusses the importance of open source platforms for continued NFV and SDN deployments

Open source platforms have been central to the rapid development and deployment of virtualized networking technologies like network functions virtualization and software-defined networking by telecommunications operators.

Much of these efforts have come under the guidance of various organizations tied to the Linux Foundation, like the Open Platform for NFV project and OpenDaylight, as well as companies working with OpenStack.

Lenovo Networking recently bolstered its work in the open source space, joining OPNFV as a “platinum” member, and holding a seat on the project’s board and technical steering committee.

The company also announced plans to work with Red Hat to develop a certified solution stack based on Red Hat’s NFV Platform and built on Red Hat OpenStack Platform. The moves are part of the vendor’s plans for its Open Platform@Lenovo service it said will run on “hardened” infrastructure tuned to be compliant with the Open Compute Project.

On this week’s NFV/SDN Reality Check we spoke with Igor Marty, CTO at Lenovo Networking, to get the vendors view on the importance of open source in the continued development and deployment of NFV and SDN platforms by telecom operators, and insight into how the vendor community is working both internally and with telecom operators to further technology advancements.

Make sure to check us out again for our next show when we are scheduled to speak with Accenture to look at how enterprises are moving towards network virtualization and the impact that move is having on communication service providers.
