Huawei, Vodafone Spain deploy DB-HSDPA

Huawei said this technology improves the experience for subscribers on UMTS networks in the 900 MHz band

Chinese vendor Huawei and Vodafone Spain have completed what the companies claim to be the world’s first commercial implementation of dual-band High Speed Downlink Packet Access technology.
Huawei said that this solution delivers approximately double the amount of Universal Mobile Telecommunications System throughput compared to a single carrier on the UMTS 900 MHz band.
On the Vodafone Spain network, there is a single carrier on UMTS 900 MHz. However, due to the coverage advantages provided by low-frequency bands, UMTS 900 MHz can absorb a larger number of subscribers than UMTS 2100 MHz, Huawei said. Dual-band High Speed Downlink Packet Access improves the experience for subscribers on UMTS networks in the 900 MHz band.
The Chinese vendor also said that the DB-HSDPA is a 3GPP Release 9-defined technology. DB-HSDPA capable terminals are able to receive and monitor two bands simultaneously, delivering a better user experience.
“Huawei and Vodafone have cooperated closely to ensure the successful commercial deployment of DB-HSDPA. We will endeavor to assure the provision of innovative solutions, and accelerate the pace and scale of DB-HSDPA’s commercial application to benefit more subscribers.” said Peng Honghua, president of Huawei’s UMTS Product Line.

HKBN targets 150,000 mobile subscribers in Hong Kong

In other APAC news, Hong Kong Broadband Network aims to attract 150,000 users in 12 months following the launch of its new mobile virtual network operator  service, local press reported.
The network said it expects to capture 2% of the local mobile telephony market by targeting its existing broadband internet subscriber base with packages of internet and mobile services when it launches in mid-September.
HKBN currently serves approximately 815,000 fixed-broadband subscribers. The telco has wholesale deals in place with mobile network operators SmarTone and China Mobile Hong Kong.
Last month, the Office of the Communications Authority granted HKBN a mobile virtual network operator license, which also allows the firm to sell smartphones and other mobile devices.
