T-Mobile Smart Fit tempts consumers with month of unlimited data

New customers selecting the T-Mobile Smart Fit plan to be offered a recommendation at end of 30 days for which plan best fits their needs

T-Mobile US’ latest attempt to lure consumers involves the promise of usage monitoring in return for a recommendation on which rate plan would best fit a customer’s needs.
Marketed under the “Smart Fit” brand, T-Mobile US is offering new customers its unlimited data plan for one month at a $30 discount over the plan’s normal price, with the operator at the end of the period recommending which data bucket would best fit their needs. The $65 plan is the same price the carrier charges for its six-gigabyte data bucket plan, which also is the default rate plan customers selecting the Smart Fit option will be moved to should they not select another option at the end of the 30-day period.
The plan is only being offered to new T-Mobile US customers, but is available on both the consumer and enterprise side of the business.
The carrier’s base plan includes 2 GB of unthrottled data for $50 per month, with consumers able to select a total of 6 GB for $65, 10 GB for $80 and “unlimited” data for $95 per month. The unlimited data offer now includes an extra GB of data usage for a total of 26 GB before the carrier threatens to cap data speeds in select situations.
Customers on the 2 GB plan who go over their unthrottled allotment are not charged overage fees, and instead have their data speeds clipped to 2G levels.
For T-Mobile US, the Smart Fit move also could be a way to nudge more customers – should the usage numbers provide proof – up to its larger data buckets and higher monthly pricing, and continues its recent fixation on customers selecting at least its 6 GB data plan.
The carrier earlier this year brought back a four-line family plan promotion that included 6 GB of data per line, which was initially launched last November as part of the carrier’s “Un-carrier X” event. Customers also looking to take advantage of T-Mobile US’ Binge On streaming video service need to be on plans of at least 3 GB of data per month, which under current plan options begins with the 6 GB offer.
T-Mobile US earlier this month also began offering customers a free Samsung smartphone for selecting either its 6 GB or 10 GB data plans.
In its most recent financial report, T-Mobile US noted postpaid average revenue per user not including device payments was down $1.08 year-over-year to $47.11 during the second quarter. However, the results did increase 90 cents sequentially, though as a first-half trend the results were down from $47.33 in 2015, to $46.67 this year.
