AT&T selects Radcom to provide service assurance VNF probes

Deal calls for Radcom’s MaveriQ software to deploy virtual probes as VNFs running on cloud environment to monitor service assurance

AT&T said it plans to migrate network probe functions to the cloud using a service assurance software platform from Radcom, noting the move is expected to boost performance optimization and help the carrier identify and isolate network issues.
The deal calls for AT&T to use Radcom’s MaveriQ software to deploy virtual probes as virtual network functions running on the telecom operator’s AT&T Integrated Cloud. The virtual probes will be integrated into the overall network scheme using AT&T’s enhanced control, orchestration, management and policy platform.
AT&T has said its Integrated Cloud platform is where the carrier runs VNFs using OpenStack software at its core. AT&T said it set up 74 AIC physical locations in 2015, with plans for 105 by the end of this year and adding “hundreds more” by 2020.
Technology Business Research cited the AIC platform as one of a handful of initiatives by the carrier in leading the telecom space toward greater use of network functions virtualization and software-defined networking technologies.
“AT&T’s strategy with respect to these initiatives is to gain the benefits of NFV as quickly as possible,” noted TBR executive telecom analyst Michael Sullivan-Trainor. “AT&T hopes to work out the technical options in initial deployments, then scale those deployments across its footprint before finally federating the solution.”
AT&T unveiled the ECOMP initiative earlier this year, which it said was designed to automate network services and infrastructure running in a cloud environment. The carrier recently said it is moving the ECOMP platform to the open source community, with plans to work with the Linux Foundation on the structure of the open source release.
In touting the platform, AT&T said ECOMP is “mature, feature-complete and tested in real-world deployments. And, we believe it will mature SDN and become the industry standard. Releasing this software into open source levels the worldwide playing field for everyone. Most importantly, we believe this will rapidly accelerate innovation across the cloud and networking ecosystems.”
