Inland Cellular taps ExteNet distributed EPC for LTE expansion

The ExteNet distributed EPC platform to operate alongside Nokia RAN to bolster LTE coverage, serve as Inland Cellular migration path to 5G

Distributed network provider ExteNet Systems said it’s working with Washington-based rural operator Inland Cellular to bolster LTE services across parts of Washington and Idaho.
The partnership calls for ExteNet to provide its MNet distributed evolved packet core platform to work alongside Nokia’s radio access network infrastructure. ExteNet said its architecture provides for scalability in support of current LTE services, as well as migration toward ‘5G’ technologies. The firm also touted support for wireless roaming, integrated LTE and Wi-Fi networks, neutral-host small cell networks, and networks supporting the “internet of things.”
“We chose ExteNet due primarily to its technical and project expertise along with a carrier-focused approach to delivering networks,” explained Chip Damato, director of business strategy at Inland Cellular. “They have put us in a position to quickly and easily deliver value-added services to our customers.”
Financial terms of the deal were not released.
Inland Cellular, which currently counts 85 employees and operates 110 cell sites, previously signed an LTE roaming agreement with Sprint as part of the nationwide carrier’s Rural Roaming Preferred Program. The program was developed in connection with the Competitive Carriers Association and tied to a previously announced agreement between Sprint and CCA, which calls for the association’s carrier members to tap into CCA’s Data Services Hub as a clearinghouse for reciprocal roaming agreements with Sprint. The rural carrier earlier this month expanded LTE coverage to Pomeroy, Dayton and Waitsburg, Washington.
ExteNet last month announced plans to acquire indoor infrastructure specialist Telecommunication Properties for an undisclosed amount. Telecommunication Properties focuses on fiber-fed distributed antenna systems and small cells for stadiums and class A office buildings. The company operates the DAS in several high-profile venues, including AT&T Stadium and Madison Square Garden. Going forward, these systems will be maintained by ExteNet.
