Connecting NFV islands

On this week’s NFV/SDN Reality Check, we speak with TM Forum on deployment and operational challenges in connecting NFV islands

Virtualization platforms using network functions virtualization and software-defined networking technologies continue a slow roll out across telecom network operations. The current pace is being impacted by the continued maturation of NFV and SDN targeting telecom networks and challenges within operators in dealing with these new platforms.
With deployments actually happening and commercial services relying on NFV and SDN platforms, telecom operators are beginning to get a better understanding of how they impact operations and what is needed for further support. But, to truly gain operational and cost efficiencies, operators will need to begin brining together what are currently disparate deployments to garner benefits. Solitary service deployments can provide a boost compared to the use of legacy systems, but grouping those virtualized services is where carriers need to get in order to unlock the promise of NFV and SDN.
On this week’s Carrier Wrap, we speak with Barry Graham, program director for the agile program at TM Forum, to get insight into the current problem of NFV islands and what carriers can do to connect those deployments.

Graham also previews the upcoming TM Forum Live event, scheduled for May 9-12, in Nice, France. The organization expects more than 3,000 attendees at this year’s event, including more than 350 C-level executives. RCR Wireless News will also be on site to bring all the latest news and insight from the event, as well as featured interviews with attendees, exhibitors and speakers.
That will do it for this week’s show. Make sure to check us out again next week when we are scheduled to speak with Versa Networks on the importance of testing and interoperability for NFV and SDN.
