Huawei, StarHub unveils new 4G LTE-A solution

The new Huawei, Starhub offering achieves indoor speeds of 1Gbps

Chinese ICT provider Huawei and Singapore telecoms operator StarHub have unveiled a new 4G LTE-Advanced solution which achieved 1 Gbps of indoor coverage.

The new solution combined StarHub’s 55 megahertz of frequency spectrum across the 1800 MHz, 2.1 GHz and 2.6 GHz bands to deliver gigabit bandwidth.

This new announcement comes after StarHub’s deployment of Huawei’s  small cell solution as part of its 4G LTE-Advanced Heterogeneous Network (HetNet) upgrade at the Marina Bay Sands last year to boost indoor network capacity and speeds for customers.

“We are closely tracking the development of this new small cell solution, to help us enhance network quality quickly and cost-efficiently, providing customers with much faster data speeds even within buildings and in crowded areas,” StarHub’s CTO Mock Pak Lum said. “In collaboration with partners like Huawei, we are always on the lookout for the latest available technologies to stay ahead of trends and to meet customer expectations.”

“The continuous advancement of mobile network technologies offers tremendous opportunities for better service experience over apps on smart devices. Indoor digital networks will be just as indispensable as running water and electricity for buildings,” said David Zheng, Vice President of Small Cell Product Line, Wireless Production Line, Huawei.

Commercial trials of the solution are ongoing, and StarHub aims to deploy it when supported phone models reach the Asian nation.

M1 launches Wi-Fi in public buses through 4G technology

Also in Singapore, local telecoms operator M1, in collaboration with the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA), have launched Singapore’s first WiFi-On-The-Go service on public buses.

The service will be initially available on 176 buses. Each connected bus is linked to M1’s advanced 4G+ network through an intelligent in-vehicle unit that boosts the bandwidth available to the on-board wireless network.

M1 said that WiFi-On-The-Go can help business by enabling new applications. For instance, inbound tour operators can now provide tourists with WiFi on board their tour buses. Vehicle fleet operators can also use the enhanced connectivity to stream live video and collect other relevant information from the vehicle, as well as provide transactional services, the telco said.

“We are pleased to launch Singapore’s first WiFi-On-The-Go service on public transit, made possible through M1’s advanced 4G+ mobile network. With the rollout of our M1WiFi service and the extension of our small cell network to additional high traffic sites, such as transportation hubs and shopping malls, as well as to selected connected vehicles in 2016, M1 customers can look forward to enjoying an even better data experience,” M1’s CTO Denis Seek said.
