Ericsson launches four new solutions geared toward 5G

‘Mobile Broadband for Everyone’ seeks to boost coverage in emerging markets

Swedish vendor Ericsson unveiled four new solutions to support communication service providers in capturing the business opportunities created in the run up to the “5G” era.

“Fueled by the ‘Internet of Things,’ 5G and the cloud, service providers will see a growing number of diverse network uses, which will bring new value chains, financial models and business opportunities. To capture the opportunities ahead, service providers will have to continuously transform and adopt new ways to create value for consumers,” Ericsson said in a statement.

The first solution is dubbed Mobile Broadband for Everyone. According to Ericsson’s latest Mobility Report, 90% of the world´s population will be covered by W-CDMA/HSPA mobile broadband networks by 2021. At the same time, more than 50% of the world’s population today still lacks Internet access, especially in developing countries, which provides a great opportunity for mobile operators.

Mobile Broadband for Everyone includes W-CDMA Flow of Users, Zero Touch W-CDMA and Mobile Broadband Expander. Ericsson claims its W-CDMA Flow of Users doubles network performance on existing site infrastructure; Zero Touch W-CDMA increases network operational efficiency by a factor of three; and Mobile Broadband Expander drastically lowers total cost of ownership by up to 60% while simplifying deployments of the hundreds of thousands 2G-only sites already in use.

According to Sebastian Tolstoy, head of marketing and communications for Ericsson’s Radio Business Unit, the launch of the Mobile Broadband for Everyone solution will allow telecom operators to expand coverage of mobile broadband services in emerging markets. Ericsson said the Mobile Broadband for Everyone solution will be fully available in the second quarter of 2016.

The second solution launched by the Swedish firm is Delivering Extreme App Coverage, which is designed to help operators improve the efficiency of LTE technology while meeting increasing network demands created by growing data traffic. Ericsson is launching new Ericsson Radio System software and hardware supporting commercial services offering LTE connectivity at peak speeds up to 1 gigabit per second.

Ericsson said Delivering Extreme App Coverage will be commercially available beginning in the second quarter of the year.

Ericsson is also launching new functionalities of its Experience Centric Managed Services. Those enhancements include the Service Operations Center and the Experience Management Center functions of its Experience Centric Managed Services product.

The SOC is designed to monitor in real time the performance of services such as video streaming and Web browsing, which is translated and correlated into network performance requirements. The EMC is said to monitor consumers’ experiences and perception through surveys, social media analytics, net performance score studies and churn analysis, which is translated and correlated into service performance requirements.

Ericsson said the new features of Experience Centric Managed Services are available immediately.

Finally, Ericcson unveiled Revenue Manager, which is a convergent, real-time charging and billing product for digital service providers. The new solution is said to enable service providers to launch new products and services in days, capture new revenue streams with real-time revenue sharing and drive customer experience through personalized omnichannel interactions, embedded analytics and unified policy control. The Revenue Manager will be generally available in June 2016.

Ericsson said the four new solutions will be showcased during the upcoming Mobile World Congress event.
