Verizon Go90 set to hit 2M downloads

Apptopia claims Verizon Go90 app will hit 2 million downloads in the coming weeks

Verizon Wireless’ Go90 video streaming service looks to off to a modest start, with one analytics firm claiming the application was on track for 2 million downloads by early this year.

Apptopia claims the Go90 platform had been downloaded 1.8 million times by Dec. 15, with momentum suggesting it would hit the 2 million mark in the coming weeks. Those downloads are skewed towards devices powered by Google’s Android operating system, with Apptopia claiming more than 1 million downloads via the Google Play store vs. Apple’s App Store.

Verizon Wireless for its part has been quiet on Go90 adoption.

While the Go90 service is from Verizon Wireless, the application is available for download to any device running Android or iOS regardless of carrier. Those on Verizon Wireless, however, do have access to some exclusive content not available to customers on other carriers.

Verizon rolled out a beta trial of the Go90 service in early September, followed by a commercial launch in October. The service focuses on “live-type news clips and sports and events,” taking advantage of content deals Verizon Wireless has struck with providers.

Verizon Wireless is also reported to be readying a premium version of the service that would not count data usage against a customer’s data bucket. Such a move would seem to mimic T-Mobile US’ recently launched Binge On service that allows select customers to stream video content from a handful of video service providers – including Go90 – without impacting a customer’s data allotment.

The Federal Communications Commission recently sent a letter to T-Mobile US seeking additional insight into the Binge On service and whether the offer might be in violation of the FCC’s recently enacted Open Internet Order. FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler initially stated he did not think the Binge On service violated current net neutrality or recently instituted Open Internet provisions, indicating the offer was “highly innovative and highly competitive.”
