C Spire targets Verizon, AT&T with ‘combos’

Regional carrier claims new packages simpler, cheaper than larger rivals’

Regional telecom operator C Spire unveiled new package pricing for rate plans and devices in a move to simplify consumer choices and target larger rivals Verizon Wireless and AT&T Mobility.

The packages include seven preselected “combos” that include rate plans with unlimited domestic voice calling, messaging and data buckets of either 3 gigabytes or 8 gigabytes for each line of service. The plans also include C Spire’s Overage Protection feature, which sends out text messages when a line of service nears its data bucket limit and then stops all data service when the data bucket limit is reached to allow the customer to decide on adding more data.

“With us, you’re always in control and there are no surprises on your bill at the end of the month,” explained Suzy Hays, SVP of consumer markets for Mississippi-based C Spire. “We let you decide if you want more data. Other carriers take this chance to charge you huge fees without ever asking.”

Each combo has a specific standard smartphone attached, though consumers can substitute in a different device at an alternate monthly price. Available devices include Apple’s iPhone 5c, 5s, 6, 6 Plus, 6s and 6s Plus; Samsung’s Galaxy S5, S4, Grand Prime, Note 5, S6 and S6 Edge; Motorola Moto E and Moto X; LG’s G4; and HTC’s One. Customers can also select varying down payments, which also alters the per-monthly price.

C Spire claims its combo pricing undercuts similar offers from the industry’s two largest wireless operators, Verizon Wireless and AT&T Mobility, as well as provides greater pricing clarity and control for consumers.

“Competitors advertise one price, but when you add in everything you need, including the access line, the phone and the data, you end up with a price that’s much higher than where you started,” Hays said. “When consumers compare total prices, they see where the real value is. It turns out the best value in wireless is also the simplest.”

The domestic wireless market has seen a number of recent pricing moves as carriers position themselves ahead of the holidays.

T-Mobile US this week launched a promotion providing customers with three months of unlimited data as well as touted plans to target its nationwide rivals with new promotions starting next week. That followed its launch earlier this month of changes to its Simple Choice rate plans and the rollout of its Binge On video-streaming platform.

Sprint last week announced a 50% discount for customers porting their service over from one of its nationwide rivals.

Verizon Wireless has been quiet on the postpaid front, though the carrier recently altered its prepaid pricing to better align with current trends in that space.

AT&T Mobility has been a bit quieter in the promotions department, although it did tap into its recently acquired Mexican operations to offer roaming services to its U.S. customers.
