T-Mobile prepaid brand MetroPCS set for Nov. 19 enhancements

T-Mobile US prepaid brand MetroPCS is again set for trickle-down benefits from its parent company, including more data, streaming music and optimized data transport.

MetroPCS said beginning Nov. 19, it will add 1 gigabyte of unthrottled data access to its $40 and $50 per month plans, which will now include 3 GB and 5 GB of high-speed data access, respectively. Those customers will also be able to use their entire data allotment with their device acting as a mobile hot spot, while customers on the carrier’s $60 per month “unlimited” data plan will see their mobile hot spot allotment grow from 6 GB to 8 GB.

Customers on rate plans beginning at $40 per month are set to have access to MetroPCS’ Music Unlimited service, which includes access to 33 streaming music services that will not take away from a customer’s data allotment. The service is similar to T-Mobile US’ Music Freedom service launched in 2014.

Sprint’s Virgin Mobile USA prepaid brand last month launched a free streaming music service on select rate plans.

MetroPCS customers are also set to benefit from optimized data streaming technology from T-Mobile US’ recently launched Binge On platform. The MetroPCS iteration is dubbed Data Maximizer, with the carrier noting all customers will have access to the platform, which it claims allows users to watch up to three times more streaming video content using the same amount of data.

“T-Mobile’s proprietary technology achieves this by optimizing streaming video for mobile device screens, maximizing resolutions at DVD or better quality while minimizing data consumption,” the carrier explained.

T-Mobile US noted 67% of MetroPCS customers on its current 2 GB data plans use all of their allotment by the third week of the month.

T-Mobile US recently reported its prepaid services attracted 595,000 net new customers during its third quarter, which was a significant year-over-year increase and outpaced its rivals.

T-Mobile US in July expanded its “Mobile without Borders” promotion to MetroPCS, providing those prepaid customers with the option for unlimited calling and messaging to the U.S. and access to their current data plans, including LTE usage, when traveling in Mexico; and unlimited calling and messaging to Mexico from the U.S. T-Mobile US reported in June it had completed the turn down of MetroPCS’ legacy CDMA network.
