AT&T Domain 2.0 program welcomes Nokia as latest partner

Nokia tapped to join AT&T Domain 2.0 program to deliver carrier-grade SDN, NFV and cloud solutions

AT&T continues to bolster its Domain 2.0 supplier program, announcing this week the addition of Nokia to the software-centric vendor initiative.

AT&T heaped praise on Nokia in announcing the move, with Susan Johnson, SVP for AT&T Global Supply Chain stating: “We’re constantly looking for agile and innovative companies to join our Domain 2.0 supplier program. And Nokia is one of them.”

AT&T launched the Domain 2.0 program in late 2013, updating its initial Domain 1.0 program that dated back to 2009. The 2.0 upgrade placed greater emphasis on bringing new partners into the telecom space in order to help AT&T tap software-defined networking, network functions virtualization and cloud technology to separate hardware and software functionality; separate the network control plane and forwarding planes; and improve management of functionality in the software layer.

The telecom giant announced its first round of vendor partners in early 2014, which included Ericsson, Tail-F Systems, Affirmed Networks and Metaswitch Networks. AT&T later added more vendors to the program, including Amdocs and Juniper Networks.

“Our work with telecom vendors, startups and open source communities in the Domain 2.0 vendor ecosystem is evidence that the industry is gaining momentum for the software-centric model,” the company said in announcing Nokia as its latest partner.

AT&T has announced it plans to control 75% of its network using SDN and NFV by 2020, and earlier this year said it was on track to meet its goal of controlling 5% of its target network by the end of this year.

Verizon Communications earlier this year named Nokia as a partner in the telecom operators own SDN program. The other named partners included Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Ericsson and Juniper Networks.
