China IoT History

China IoT has been core to China’s overall technology roadmap since Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao called for the rapid development of Internet of Things during a speech in the city of Wuxi on August 7, 2009, during which he coined the phrase “Internet + Internet of things = wisdom of the earth”.

In March 2010, following Jiabao’s first mention of IoT by a head of state, China established the Shanghai Center of Internet of Things to develop IOT core technologies, to lead the nation in standards and regulations, to promote the application of the IOT and to accelerate the industrialization of technological achievements.

In December 2012, CNN reported that Beijing planned to invest 5 billion yuan ($800 million) in the IoT industry by 2015. The Ministry of Information and Technology estimated China’s IoT market will hit 500 billion yuan ($80.3 billion) by 2015, then double to 1 trillion yuan ($166 billion) by 2020.

In early 2014, Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of the People’s Republic of China (MoHURD), reported a commitment to fund 193 national smart city pilots representing a RMB 1 trillion investment.

In July 2015, GSMA declared that China IoT,with 74 million M2M connections, was the global leader in deployment of Internet of Things.
