ONF launches workforce-focused SDN certification program

ONF Certified SDN Professional Program designed to support changing skill sets

The Open Networking Foundation is looking to bolster support for its open software-defined networking position through the release of a Certified SDN Professional Program, which is to include testing and training sessions ahead of the certification exam.

ONF said the program is designed to “provide a strong foundation of vendor-neutral, concept and technical-level credentials in open SDN that can integrate with and complement individual vendor certifications in networking technologies or programming languages. The beta examinations are based on best practices illustrated in a variety of independent learning and training programs, and they are designed to evolve alongside the SDN ecosystem.”

Once passed, candidates will receive a certificate and an authorized registration number for their certification that ONF said would be managed through a global online portal available to certification owners and prospective employers. The online exams are open to all interested, with ONF offering free exams to the first 100 participants. Testing and training sessions are scheduled for the SDN & OpenFlow World Congress set for Oct. 12-16, in Düsseldorf, German.

ONF was formed in 2011 by a handful of technology and telecom heavyweights, including Deutsche Telekom, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Verizon Communications and Yahoo. The non-profit organization claims more than 130 members, focused on the adoption of SDN platforms using OpenFlow and open SDN technologies.

The organization last month unveiled a new OpenFlow testing specification. ONF said the OpenFlow version 1.3 testing specification includes specific features designed to ensure the development of “richly functional SDN products and services,” and pushes mandatory inclusion of protocol components within products.
