Telefónica partners with NetCracker, NEC on automation PoC

PoC combines NFV and SDN from NetCracker and NEC to power Telefónica WAN portfolio

Proof of concepts continue to dominate the world of network functions virtualization and software-defined networking, with NEC, its NetCracker Technology division and Telefónica Business Solutions claiming the successful completion of a recent PoC targeting automation in the business market.

The PoC is said to have combined SDN and NFV to provide a “more dynamic services” to the worldwide WAN portfolio for enterprises. The participants compiled the technologies into an end-to-end solution for a virtualized VPN service over a virtual CPE, with full orchestration and a self-care stack provided by NEC and NetCracker integrated with Telefónica’s virtual infrastructure platform.

The companies stated the orchestration solution was able to handle automated provisioning and activation of virtualized and traditional networks to establish the virtualized VPN service and deploy the virtual network functions in a cloud environment.

“The solution enabled the fully automated provisioning of a virtualized VPN service triggered by customers from a self-care portal, as well as fully automated value-added service provisioning and configuration,” the companies noted. “The solution allowed customers to access the VNF settings, including provisioning new remote VPN users on an SSL gateway straight from the self-care portal, establishing and modifying firewall and Web content filtering policies and giving the remote employees access to corporate network resources as well as policy-driven access to corporate resources on public cloud services.”

Telefónica stated the PoC looked to tackle growing network complexity, with the results supporting expectations to reduce time to delivery from weeks to minutes and the ability to manage customer requests in real time once services are provisioned.

The trial would seem to build on a deal earlier this year between Telefónica and NetCracker to update the telecom giant’s business support systems supporting seven Latin American operations.

Telefónica has been one of the more aggressive telecom operators in the NFV and SDN space, having earlier this year struck deals with Hewlett-Packard and Alcatel-Lucent in pushing its virtualization plans.
