AT&T continues prepaid fight against T-Mobile, rivals with Cricket expansion

Cricket Wireless now offers calling plans to Latin, South America; Canada roaming

AT&T Mobility further bolstered the international reach of its Cricket Wireless prepaid brand, adding nine new countries to the service’s calling reach and now offering unlimited calling and messaging to and from the U.S. and Canada.

Cricket customers can now add the option to place a fixed amount of calls and send unlimited messages to a select number of countries in Latin and South America for $10 to $15 per month per country. The countries include the Dominican Republic at $10 per month for 100 calling minutes; Colombia at $10 per month for 150 calling minutes; Costa Rica at $10 per month for 100 calling minutes; El Salvador at $15 per month for 60 calling minutes; Honduras at $15 per month for 60 calling minutes; Guatemala at $15 per month for 70 calling minutes; Jamaica at $15 per month for 40 calling minutes; Haiti at $15 per month for 40 calling minutes; and Nicaragua at $15 per month for 40 calling minutes.

The unlimited messaging option includes text, picture and video messaging, and the packages can be added to Cricket’s current Smart Plan or Pro Plan.

Following up on the expansion of roaming into Mexico earlier this year, Cricket customers on Smart and Pro plans now receive unlimited calling and text messaging between the U.S. and Canada at no additional charge in their current rate plan. The messaging option includes text, picture and video messaging to Canada from the U.S., and text messaging from Canada to the U.S.

AT&T Mobility earlier this year added unlimited voice calling and text messaging to and from Mexico for customers on Cricket’s Smart and Pro plans. The move built on AT&T’s recent push into the Mexican mobile market, with the company having spent $4.4 billion acquiring Iusacell and Nextel Mexico, with commitments to spend an additional $3 billion to expand “high-speed, mobile Internet service” to 100 million people in Mexico by the end of 2018.

AT&T showed marked improvements in prepaid activity during the second quarter with the carrier posting 331,000 net additions compared with a loss of 286,000 prepaid customers last year. The latest result indicates AT&T Mobility is finally seeing positive traction from its Cricket division it acquired last year from Leap Wireless.

T-Mobile US last month expanded its “Mobile without Borders” initiative to MetroPCS, providing customers currently on plans beginning at $40 per month the ability to sign up for the Mexico Unlimited plan that provides for unlimited calling, messaging to the U.S. and access to their current data plans, including LTE usage, when traveling in Mexico; and unlimited calling and messaging to Mexico from the U.S. Customers signing up for the plan by Aug. 31 receive the service free through the end of the year, with those missing the deadline charged $5 per month for the service.

T-Mobile US CEO John Legere earlier this month took to his Twitter account to call out the carrier’s rivals in copying T-Mobile US’ marketing moves.
