Small cells trends

This week on HetNet Happenings Sean Kinney, RCR Wireless News managing editor, discusses trends in the small cells space with Current Analysis Service Director Jason Marcheck.

With major carriers like Sprint eyeing small cell rollouts that analysts predict could hit 70,000 units, Marcheck agreed that small cells are poised to take off in a major way in 2015.

“I think one of the key developments, in general, is the fact that … this seems to be the year where real commercial momentum is getting off the ground,” Marchek said, suggesting that the macro buildouts needed prior to small deployments have been done.

He also pointed out the complexities involved in deploying small cells, including fiber access and concurrency with municipal governments.

“I think what is happening with the industry is there enough experience there that you’re starting to see batch agreements,” he said. “There were a lot of issues beyond just the size of the radio that really had to come together before the industry could really take off.”
