Virtualizing carrier support platforms – NFV/SDN Reality Check Episode 23

ItsOn provides insight into how vendors are using virtualization technologies like SDN and NFV to bolster their carrier support platforms.

Telecom operators are feverishly working towards implementing virtualization technologies like software-defined networking, network functions virtualization and cloud platforms into their operations in hopes of garnering network and operating efficiencies. This work also requires their vendor and service partners to look at similar virtualized platforms in order to integrate those services into the new environment to power their carrier support platforms.

ItsOn is one company making such adjustments, working with operators to power provisioning services using virtualization and cloud. ItsOn last year began work with Sprint in supplying its Smart Services Platform to allow for the deployment of new network and mobile services. That platform runs as a software-as-as-service cloud platform to “design and implement granular service policy control” for data, messaging and voice services.

That partnership deepened with Sprint’s Virgin Mobile USA prepaid brand tapping the platform to power its Virgin Mobile Custom no-contact rate plan that allows customers to select their own calling, messaging and data allowances at any time using an application embedded on their smartphone.

This week we spoke with Robert Oberhofer, VP of product marketing at ItsOn, to get further insight into how the company is taking advantage of virtualization technologies to bolster its carrier platforms and how it views the ongoing evolution of SDN, NFV and cloud in the telecom space.

Make sure to join us on Aug. 14 for our next live episode of NFV/SDN Reality Check when we are scheduled to speak with Jason Andersen, VP of business line management at Stratus Technologies.
