TDC brings LTE-A technology to Denmark

The LTE-A service will initially be available in Copenhagen with peak data speeds of 300 Mbps

Danish telecoms operator TDC has started to deploy LTE-Advanced carrier aggregation technology across its network in Denmark.

The telco said that the new technology will enable the offering of peak data speeds of 300 megabits per second. Through its LTE network, TDC is currently offering data transfer speeds of up to 150 Mbps. The telco aims to offer even higher speeds with the planned deployment of tri-band carrier aggregation in the coming months.

TDC’s LTE-A technology was initially deployed on 500 mobile masts in selected locations in Copenhagen, Aarhus, Aalborg, Esbjerg, Holstebro, Næstved, Odense, Slagelse and Viborg. The operator noted that few devices on the Danish market currently support the LTE-A, but said mobile devices would soon start to be more widely available in the local market.

TDC initially launched LTE services in Denmark in 2011 through spectrum in the 2600 MHz band, and also offers LTE through the 800 MHz band. Rival operators 3 and Telenor launched LTE services in 2012 and 2013, respectively.

TDC currently covers 99.5% of Denmark with its 3G and “4G” networks, and ended the first quarter of 2015 with a total of 1.78 million mobile subscribers in the consumer segment. Corporate mobile subscriptions totaled 761,000 at the end of the period. TDC also provides residential pay-TV and broadband services as well as corporate services in Norway, and mobile and fixed-line services in Sweden.

Denmark is among the most advanced countries in Europe in terms of LTE deployment. The European Commission’s 2015 Digital Agenda Scoreboard revealed that Denmark, Netherlands and Sweden lead the European Union, with 99% of households covered by LTE technology.

According to the Global mobile Suppliers Association, a total of 64 operators as of April had commercially launched LTE-Advanced systems in 39 countries.
